CNC Machining for Aerospace Parts: Materials, Tolerances, and Quality

Table of Contents

In the high-stakes aerospace manufacturing industry, every machined component carries the weight of flight safety, long-term operational reliability, and mission success. When aircraft traverse extreme temperature fluctuations at stratospheric altitudes, launch vehicles withstand intense vibration during ascent, and satellite systems operate continuously in the harsh vacuum of space, the precision and durability of their parts define the upper limit of overall equipment performance. This is where ZONZE, a global leading precision CNC machining provider, stands as a trusted partner for aerospace clients worldwide, delivering components that meet the industry’s most stringent standards.

What Aerospace Buyers Look for in Suppliers

For aerospace procurement teams, selecting a CNC machining supplier is never a cost-first decision. The top priority is proven qualification and track record in aerospace projects: suppliers must hold industry-specific certifications such as AS9100, and have verifiable experience processing safety-critical components for flight-related applications. Unlike general industrial parts, aerospace parts require full traceability of every production step, so buyers prioritize suppliers with standardized process management systems that can track raw material sources, processing parameters, and inspection records for every single part.

Technical expertise in complex, high-precision processing is another non-negotiable requirement. Aerospace parts often feature complex curved surfaces, thin-walled structures, and tight tolerance requirements, so suppliers need to have mature processing technology for high-performance aerospace materials, as well as the ability to solve common problems such as material deformation and tool wear during processing. In addition, the ability to provide complete compliance documentation to support airworthiness certification, flexible response to design iterations, and on-time delivery even for small-batch customized orders are also key factors that aerospace buyers value.

ZONZE’s aerospace service system is built entirely around these requirements: we assign a dedicated project manager to each aerospace client, provide real-time production progress updates, and proactively communicate potential process risks, ensuring that every order meets the client’s schedule and quality expectations.

Common Materials for Aerospace CNC Parts

Aerospace parts need to balance multiple performance requirements including high strength, light weight, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, so the selection of materials is particularly critical. ZONZE has mastered mature processing technology for all mainstream aerospace materials.

Titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) are the most widely used aerospace materials, with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio 60% higher than steel, and outstanding corrosion resistance to atmospheric and fuel erosion. They are commonly used in aircraft structural frames, engine compressor parts, and landing gear components. ZONZE’s custom cooling and cutting parameter design for titanium alloys avoids material deformation and micro-cracks during processing, ensuring the structural integrity of the parts.

High-temperature superalloys (Inconel 718, Hastelloy X) can maintain stable mechanical properties even under long-term working conditions of 600°C to 1200°C, and are the first choice for engine hot section components such as turbine blades, combustion chambers, and nozzle parts. ZONZE uses diamond-coated tools and low-stress cutting processes to process superalloys, ensuring that the surface hardness and dimensional accuracy of the parts meet design requirements.

High-strength aluminum alloys (7075-T6, 6061-T6) are widely used in airframe skins, internal brackets, and avionics housings due to their low density, excellent machinability, and low cost. For thin-walled aluminum alloy parts prone to deformation, ZONZE adopts a layered processing and stress relief process, controlling the deformation within 0.01mm.

In addition, ZONZE also has rich processing experience in special aerospace materials including carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), magnesium alloys, and aerospace-grade stainless steels, meeting the diversified material needs of different aerospace projects.

Tolerance and Quality Control Requirements

Aerospace parts have far stricter tolerance and quality control requirements than general industrial parts, and any minor deviation may lead to serious safety risks. ZONZE implements a zero-defect quality management system throughout the entire production process.

In terms of dimensional tolerance, ZONZE can achieve a tolerance of ±0.002mm for high-precision aerospace parts such as gyroscope components, valve bodies, and turbine blade profiles, and ensure that the geometric position tolerances including coaxiality, perpendicularity, and profile tolerance meet the design requirements. For thin-walled parts with a wall thickness of less than 0.5mm, we use special fixtures and low-stress processing technology to control dimensional deviation within ±0.005mm.

The quality control process covers every link from incoming materials to finished product delivery. All incoming raw materials are subject to material composition testing and mechanical property verification, with material certificates retained for at least 10 years to ensure full traceability. During processing, each operator performs self-inspection after each process, and the quality inspection team performs random inspection of key dimensions, with an inspection coverage rate of 100% for safety-critical features. After processing, all parts undergo surface defect inspection, non-destructive testing, and dimensional full inspection to eliminate any defective products.

ZONZE’s quality inspection laboratory is equipped with 5-axis CMMs with a measurement accuracy of ±0.001mm, laser scanners, roughness testers, and hardness testers, providing objective and accurate quality data for every part.

How to Handle Documentation and Inspection

Complete, standardized documentation and strict inspection processes are key to ensuring that aerospace parts meet airworthiness certification requirements and supply chain management standards. ZONZE provides a full set of traceable documentation for every aerospace order.

The documentation package includes: raw material certification documents indicating material composition, mechanical properties, and heat treatment status; detailed processing process logs recording cutting parameters, tool models, and operator information for each process; heat treatment and surface treatment reports; dimensional inspection reports covering all key dimensions; and non-destructive testing reports including flaw detection and pressure testing results as required. All documents are formatted in accordance with aerospace industry standards and can be directly submitted for airworthiness certification review.

In terms of inspection, ZONZE supports multi-level inspection options according to client needs. The standard process includes factory full inspection before delivery; clients can also choose third-party inspection by designated authoritative institutions such as SGS and BV, or witness inspection on site during production. For mass production orders, we implement first article inspection (FAI) before mass production, and only start full production after the first article is fully qualified, ensuring consistency of product quality across the entire batch.

We also provide customized document management services, allowing clients to access all production and inspection data of their orders through our digital system at any time, meeting the aerospace supply chain’s strict requirements for traceability and transparency.
